Getting Dressed Used to Be a Commitment
Spend a moment thinking about what getting dressed looked like before the zipper. Boots were fastened with hooks and a special tool designed just for the job. Corsets required another person's help to lace properly. Men's trousers had button flies that took time and attention to manage. A woman getting dressed in the 1880s might spend twenty minutes just on her boots.
The need for something faster was obvious. The solution, you'd think, would have been straightforward. Instead, the zipper's path from concept to closet took more than sixty years, involved multiple inventors, at least two major patent battles, and a moment of public embarrassment that accidentally changed everything.
The First Attempt Nobody Remembers
The first recognizable zipper-like device was patented in 1851 by Elias Howe — the same Elias Howe who invented the sewing machine. His patent described an "Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure," but Howe never developed the idea commercially. He was busy with the sewing machine, and the clothing closure sat in his patent files largely unnoticed.
The next significant attempt came from Whitcomb Judson, a Chicago engineer who patented a "Clasp Locker" in 1893 and debuted it at the Chicago World's Fair. Judson's device was a hook-and-eye system operated by a sliding guide — clunky by modern standards, prone to popping open unexpectedly, and not particularly easy to manufacture. The company he founded to sell it, the Universal Fastener Company, struggled for years to find customers.
Post office workers briefly used a version of Judson's device on their mail pouches, and a few boots were fitted with it, but mass adoption never came. The mechanism was unreliable, and the public was unconvinced.
Gideon Sundback and the Redesign That Actually Worked
The device that actually became the modern zipper came from a Swedish-American engineer named Gideon Sundback, who joined Judson's struggling company in 1906 and spent the next several years quietly solving the engineering problems that had plagued every previous version.
Sundback's key innovation, patented in 1913, was a new interlocking design — two facing rows of small, identical teeth that meshed together precisely when a slider moved across them. Unlike previous versions, his design was reliable. It didn't pop open under stress. It could be manufactured consistently. He also designed the machinery needed to produce it at scale, which was arguably as important as the mechanism itself.
His employer renamed the product the "Hookless Fastener." It was a perfectly functional name. It was also completely forgettable, which would matter more than anyone realized.
The Patent Wars and the Decade of Confusion
As the Hookless Fastener slowly gained traction — first with the U.S. military during World War I, which used it on flying suits and money belts — competitors emerged. The patents Sundback held were valuable, and other manufacturers wanted a piece of the market.
Legal battles over zipper-related patents dragged on for years, with different companies claiming rights to different aspects of the mechanism. The confusion slowed commercial development and made potential customers nervous about committing to a technology that might be tied up in court. Manufacturers who might have switched from buttons to these new fasteners held back, waiting to see who would control the technology and at what price.
The military contracts kept Sundback's company alive during this period, but the civilian market remained stubbornly resistant. Most clothing manufacturers saw no compelling reason to redesign their products around a fastener whose legal status was unsettled and whose public reputation was, at best, mixed.
The Children's Clothing Moment That Changed the Argument
The turning point arrived not in men's fashion or women's fashion but in children's clothing, and it happened at a trade expo in the early 1920s.
B.F. Goodrich, the rubber company, had licensed Sundback's fastener for use on rubber galoshes — the waterproof boot covers that were standard winter wear at the time. A Goodrich executive, reportedly charmed by the sound the device made when operated, coined the name that finally gave the product a personality: the zipper.
But it was the children's clothing industry that made the practical case. Manufacturers began fitting children's garments with zippers and marketing them directly to parents on the basis of independence — a child with a zippered coat could dress themselves. No buttons to fumble with. No laces to tie incorrectly. Just a single sliding motion.
The appeal was immediate and obvious in a way that adult fashion arguments hadn't been. Parents bought it. Children used it. The zipper proved itself in the most practical possible context: a small person trying to get ready for school.
From Galoshes to Everywhere
Once the children's market validated the zipper's practical appeal, adult fashion followed. Men's trousers began transitioning from button flies to zipper closures through the 1930s — a shift that was not without controversy, since button flies had been standard for so long that many men initially found the change uncomfortable.
Women's fashion adopted zippers more enthusiastically, partly because the garments involved were often more complex and time-consuming to fasten. A zipper at the back of a dress was genuinely transformative. A woman could dress without assistance. The zipper, somewhat quietly, contributed to a small but real expansion of practical independence for women who had previously relied on others to help them get dressed.
By the 1940s, metal shortages during World War II pushed manufacturers to develop nylon and plastic zipper alternatives, which were lighter, cheaper, and ultimately more versatile. The modern zipper ecosystem — metal for jeans, nylon for jackets, plastic for bags — emerged from those wartime material constraints.
The Sixty-Year Overnight Success
From Howe's forgotten 1851 patent to mainstream adoption in the 1930s, the zipper's journey spanned roughly eighty years. It was reinvented, abandoned, litigated, rebranded, and nearly discarded multiple times before the right combination of engineering, naming, and market context finally made it click.
Today, the world produces somewhere around 7 billion zippers annually. They're on jeans, jackets, bags, tents, sleeping bags, and hundreds of other products so familiar that the mechanism itself has become invisible.
Which is exactly what Sundback was trying to achieve all along — a fastener so reliable and simple that you'd never have to think about it. It just took the industry sixty years to catch up to the idea.
